Microwave a Peep

In these tough economic times, everyone is looking for cheap thrills.  All you need are some peeps (Easter is just around the corner) and a microwave.

Toss a couple of peeps on a microwave safe plate - or a paper plate if you don't want to clean up marshmallow mess - throw into the microwave for 30 seconds and watch the little baby chicks balloon to godzilla chick size.

If you're a true adventurer, you'll eat the peeps afterwards.

Polka Restaurant

Huell takes us on a Polish adventure, visiting Polka Restaurant in Eagle Rock. Ah-MAY-zing to say the least!

On our Huellventure, Polka Restaurant definitely lived up to the hype. Even at 2 in the afternoon on a Tuesday the place was packed. The decor was intense - with sassy bumper stickers and "Polish Parking only" signs everywhere. As for our meal - the first course of soup was absolutely insane and obviously contained little bits of heaven. The second course was just as satisfying and the Sesame Delight dressing IS delicious. For our main course we shared a plate of kielbasa and different kinds of pierogi (little polish dumplings stuff with meat and cheese). By the time we finished, we had to roll ourselves out of there.

Definitely check it out - and check out their website:
http://www.polkacatering.com/index.html which is packed with hilarious and random quotes like "Eating with class makes you healthier and happier!" and a full page on their Sesame Delight dressing.

BOWIE on the Big Screen

In 4th grade I went to Addie Stonack's house for a slumber party and my life was forever changed. After making prank calls to the boys we liked, Addie popped in a movie and that's when it happened. David Bowie appeared on screen, strutting around in tight pants and a lacy blouse, scowling with his steely eyes and pouty lips beneath his majestic and magical white mullet. It was at that moment I was instantly and permanently hooked on Bowie and on Labyrinth.

For those of you who have never seen this gem, Labyrinth was directed by the late, great Jim Henson, and stars David Bowie, a young Jennifer Connelly and a ton of muppets. There's singing, dancing, magic and the bog of stench!

Now for all of you in the Los Angeles area who also had a crush on David Bowie as the Goblin King in Labyrinth, good news! The NuArt Theatre is showing the 1986 classic on Friday April 3 as part of their Midnight Movies program. Get your
tickets now!

Weatherlicious

Flipping through the channels recently, I found myself watching My Fox News at 11. Normally I get my news from other sources, but I tuned in during a car chase recap which caught my attention. Just as I was about to change the channel, Weatherman Mark Thompson took the stage and began gyrating and shaking it to Nelly's "Pimp Juice" while giving the weather report.
After the first taste of Mark's kick ass weather reporting I did some research. Turns out Thompson has won an Emmy and a Golden Mike award for his weatherlicious moves!
Enjoy the clip below of Mark getting his weather on to Nelly Furtado's Promiscuous Girl.

Stan's Donuts

If you’re into eating yummy things, do yourself a favor and head down to Stan’s Donuts in Westwood. Stan’s been making donuts every morning for 50+ years in his tiny little shop.

On Huell’s visit, Stan gave him the grand tour, including showing him how he makes their famous Reese’s donut. Stan’s technique is old school to say the least - reaching into a huge bucket of peanut butter with his bare hands and squeezing a lump into the center of each donut before wrapping it up, frying it and covering it with chocolate frosting and sprinkling with a handful of chocolate chips.

With Stan’s “we don’t measure anything” philosophy, everything is decadently delicious. On your trip make sure to try the Reese’s, Old Fashioned Blueberry, and Simpsons donut (pink w/sprinkles). Forget your diet, this is food for the soul!

Well Hello There!

Meet Huell Howser। Host of California's Gold, explorer, adventurer, life enthusiast and my current spiritual guru. Those of you who watch KCET know that Huell has been a staple of Southern California public television for over 25 years, bringing us mountains of hidden historic, unique and interesting gems from every corner of this great state. Armed with a microphone, a cameraman, wide-eyed curiosity, and plenty of southern charm, Huell easily gains amazing interviews from small business owners, park rangers, docents, and random people on the street.

In the thousands of episodes of California's Gold, California's Green, California's Water, California's Golden Parks, Cal Communities, Road Trip, and Visiting, Huell shows us that a positive attitude, enthusiasm and passion for learning new things can lead to all kinds of nerdy fun.

I'm a transplant to Southern California, but I have taken to Huell's teachings with an eagerness that some people might say borders on cultish devotion. Before you judge, let me say that I have visited many of the places Huell has covered and my experiences on these Huellventures have enriched my life beyond belief.

So that being said, this blog will serve as a place to share my past and future adventures, laced with other enjoyable items that make living in Los Angeles fun and fulfilling.
